The 2010 model year is the big signal of change coming for the Mustang next year. After five model years with the retro-inspired muscle car look, the Mustang is moving towards a more modern personality. With the Mustang moving upmarket, the American sports car market is changing to keep up with the times. With competition from Chevy and Dodge growing, the Mustang is beginning to change into what will eventually be a new chapter in the pony carās life to compete on a national scale.
Although the Mustang has a new look, the car does remain largely unchanged in some ways. The reliable and durable 3-valve iron block motor is still fitted in the car, giving it a true muscle car rumble that we have come to love with the Mustang since 2005. The 4.0-liter V6 is also still available with the same 210 horsepower as before. Unfortunately, that does slow the car down slightly as it gains up to 300lbs over the base model from 2009. The benefit, however, is the increased reliability and ease of both maintenance and upgradability when working on the motor. The same 5-speed gearbox is available in the Mustang as it has been since the start of the S197 generation while the automatic gains the option to manually shift with Fordās SelectShift feature.
The Shelby GT500 motor is right at home in the new body style. While the earlier S197 used this motor for muscle car performance, with the new body the GT500 breathes new life into the performance market. The 5.4-liter supercharged modular motor fits perfectly in the new body since the car remains largely the same for the chassis and drivetrain. The GT500 also puts out 40 more horsepower than the '09 models and does feature some improvements to handle higher performance driving.
Overall, the 2010 Mustang is a look at things to come in the next few years regarding the style of the Mustang. We would not be surprised if Ford were to improve this new style to handle and perform even better than before in addition to adding more power and technology moving forward. Weāre excited to see what the future holds for the Mustang as we upgrade this new body style and build it for hardcore driving use.
