2002 Ford Mustang Specs & Details
Moving into 2002, the Mustang changed very little from the 2001 model. The Mustang featured the same Essex V6 and
Modular V8 as the previous year had received, but lost trim levels that had been available on the 2001 model. We
lost the Cobra trim level as well as the iconic and stylish Bullitt model for the 2002 model year while not gaining
anything in particular. Essentially, the 2002 model was a carryover year to hold customers before the 2003 model
year where Ford has claimed there will be new variants of the Mustang to cover a wider market.
The Mustang stays competitive against its rivals from GM with the modular setup V8 while the V6 remains incredibly
reliable and fuel-efficient at 25 miles per gallon. Compared to the V6, the V8 GT model does even better with the
larger motor and horsepower while still managing 23 miles per gallon. With advancing engine technology, it is safe
to assume that these motors will continue to improve even further regarding fuel economy and power in the near
future. To remain competitive against any incoming rivals either domestic or import, the Mustang is going to need
more power and handling than ever before on the road in order to outperform the market.
The Mustang, now in its 37th year of production, is set to stay in the market even with rumors of GM canceling both
the Camaro and Firebird for 2003. This will leave the Mustang as the sole American sports coupe against European and
Asian companies as they bring more high-performance coupes and sedans into the American market. While remaining
naturally aspirated will keep the Mustang true to its past, it may not remain competitive as higher horsepower
vehicles or better handling vehicles enter the market, so it is safe to assume a power increase in the near future.
With Ford announcing that the Cobra will make its return for the 2003 model year, we are hopeful that the extra power
will move the Mustang platform into the future of the car to keep it competitive with not only its American
competition but the competition from the rest of the world by making itself as memorable as the classic Mustang is
internationally. The future of the Mustang looks bright, and with the newly refreshed trim levels coming out next
model year we are sure to see high-output performance models in the upcoming model year.
