1998 Ford Mustang Specs & Details
Going into the 1998 model year, Ford had already announced that the Mustang would be receiving a makeover for both
the performance aspects and the overall styling of the car. With the naturally aspirated V8 motors churning out
power, the Mustang is powering through this final year of the rounded styling we’ve grown accustomed to. The SN95
Mustang has offered us the chance to see exactly how good the Mustang can be at its best performance so far, and the
1998 model year builds upon this as well. With the Cobra performing better than ever before, the 1998 Mustang is a
perfect way to lead into the next variant of the Mustang’s styling.
The entry-level Mustang sits at an affordable sub-$15,000 bracket which gives owners a comfortable, reliable, and
sporty coupe to cruise around town or down some winding roads with. With the lighter weight of the V6, the Mustang
handles well and feels predictable and nimble during enthusiastic driving. However, the 150 horsepower does make the
car feel long in the tooth when compared to its rivals from GM. The need for better performance in the entry-level
model should be fixed going into the next redesign, but until then the base V6 will continue to lag behind the
Camaro.
The more coveted GT model returns again with 225 horsepower and nearly 300 lb-ft of torque which keeps it competitive
against competing vehicles. With the more aggressive styling and throaty 2-valve exhaust note, the Mustang GT sticks
to its muscle car roots while improving handling enough to be competitive with sports cars around the racetrack.
Inside, the GT remains nearly unchanged from 1997 including the plush yet sporty and supportive seats that keep you
in control as you drive.
The top tier includes the SVT Cobra with its 4-valve setup and 305 horsepower which is more than enough to give cars
like the Trans Am a run for the money. The higher revving motor found in the Cobra not only sounds like true-blooded
muscle, but performs like it too. The Cobra still performs like a serious driver’s car should with razor-sharp
drivability and control. The naturally aspirated V8’s presence anywhere it goes is immense with its rumbling exhaust
note and great acceleration are certain to turn heads.
