Released in 1968, the movie Bullitt is still viewed today as the most memorable car chase scene
in cinema history. This was the car that put the Mustang on the map for so many people across the world.
And even today, it's viewed as an American icon as it stands for so much more than simply a
stripped-down Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT. The high-speed chase in the movie Bullitt lasts for over ten minutes. This '68 Mustang, powered
by a 390 cubic-inch V8, at speeds over 100 MPH through the city streets of San Francisco, chases a black
Dodge Charger to its eventual fiery end. Piloted by Steve McQueen’s character, Lt. Frank Bullitt, this
iconic movie scene truly puts the viewer directly inside the cars alongside this high-octane car chase.
This car only recently resurfaced in 2018 with the unveil of the 2019 Mustang Bullitt from Ford Motor
Company. It was truly an amazing sight to see the original ‘559 Bullitt (re-unveiled) parked next to the
brand new 2019 Mustang Bullitt as an enthusiast. Ever since that reveal at the North American
International Auto Show in January 2018, the car has been paraded around the world for all to see. The original '559 Bullitt is currently owned by Sean Kiernan, son of Robert Kiernan. We had the
opportunity to chat with Sean directly, and his words on selling the iconic vehicle are exactly what one
would think: bittersweet. Throughout the past two years, Sean and his family have taken this vehicle to
numerous shows, events and races. The Kiernans even shipped it overseas for a parade lap at the Goodwood
Festival of Speed -- chasing a black Dodge Charger! But with that said, all good things eventually have
to come to an end to focus on what’s most important: family. The 1968 “Bullitt” Mustang will be
up for auction with no reserve at Mecum Kissimmee on January 10, 2020. Stay tuned to this page
and the Steeda social channels as we will be posting updates from the event!
Steeda was live and in front of the action all day at the Mecum Kissimmee auction for one of the most
iconic car auctions ever. We were extremely pleased to see that the original Bullitt went for $3.4
million dollars! It was simply heart-wrenching to see Sean get in the original '559 Bullitt for one of the last times.
From our conversations with Kiernan, it seemed he was at peace with the idea letting Bullitt go to a new
home. That doesn't mean it wasn't tough to let go, though. Check out some of the photos from Steeda's
coverage for yourself! The original '559 Bullitt is truly a piece of American history. With the original patina kept intact,
this car is instantly recognizable as the hero car from the popular 1968 movie. The Kiernan family
has
done the Mustang community an amazing favor in sharing the love and passion for this vehicle with
all of
us. With that said, we truly hope the new owner will continue to carry that torch!Original Bullitt Mustang Up For Auction At Mecum Kissimmee
