2018 Mustang GT Steeda Drag Car, Part 2: Stock vs. Cold Air Intake, SGMP Test & Tune

This past Saturday our team in Valdosta, GA loaded our 10R80 2018 GT onto the trailer before putting it to the 1/4-mile test at South Georgia Motor Sports Park. The mission? To test the factory Mustang's drag strip credentials compared to the bolt-on power added by our Steeda Cold Air Intake. Hoping to make some observations solely on the performance of the intake, we held off on adding the tune for Saturday's passes.

Just like everyone else who set out to enjoy some speed on Saturday, we hoped for some stellar conditions, but the weather did not cooperate. Despite it being the first weekend of December, the temperature teetered around the mid-70s throughout the day, with humidity reaching a sticky 100%. With the conditions, we were running at a density altitude of 1050 ft to over 1350 ft. Despite this, we were determined to make the most of the day and have some fun doing it! The stock Mustang ran a 12.35 @ 117 mph versus the Mustang with the Steeda Cold Air Intake, which ran a 12.11 @ 118 mph. A quarter second shed with just the Steeda Cold Air Intake.

The car was running with 3.15 gears and factory all-season 235 tires. Maybe Ford wanted us to be ready for some snow passes, but we couldn't find any in south Georgia! After a couple hours at the track, we decided to call it a day and head back home. There is a ton of potential with this car, so we're excited to get every last detail of our tune refined, get some sticky tires on it, and get it back to the strip to log some real times! The next steps for our drag car are changing the gears and swapping the tires, after which we'll replace the exhaust, then, lastly, we'll equip it with our full range of Steeda drag racing suspension components.

As we hinted before, our goal with this project is to showcase how fast you can go in the quarter mile, without breaking the bank. We want this to be the car that you can drive every day to work and back, then take to the strip on Friday night and put down impressive numbers. We'll accomplish this with simple bolt-on parts, made right here in the USA! Stay tuned for more updates on our 2018 Mustang GT drag build.
