The Mustang has had some iconic features over the generations that stand out and are included in each new version. The sloping fastback design (save for the Notchback Fox Body), the 2+2 configuration, the V8 engine, the iconic Mustang logo, and other important features. One feature is the rear decklid, which while it was not on the Fox Body, SN95, or New Edge, is a defining and eye-catching feature boldly displayed across the back of every Mustang from the S197 through modern models. Mimicking the rear gas cap of the original Mustang, this homage piece looks awesome and has a history with the model's name.
On the S550 generation of the Mustang, running from 2015 through the 2023 model year, the new swooping and aggressive body style of the rear decklid is solely to pay homage to the original Mustang, but many people want to do away with the logo found in the center of the decklid. With the Mustang no longer featuring the faux gas cap on the rear, the options for customization arose, so custom or modified decklids became more abundant and available.
